SurfTalk is a background application that works in conjunction with Netscape Navigator™ and Apple's PlainTalk® speech technologies to allow users to surf the web by voice.
The recommended version of PlainTalk is 1.5. Earlier versions of PlainTalk may be compatible with SurfTalk, but are not recommended and may result in system crashes or systems hangs.
Apple's PlainTalk English Speech Recognition technology is designed for speakers of North American Adult English.
Sound Control Panel
Before running the demo, make sure that your Sound control panel options are set as follows:
• Sound In Options…
Input Source: Microphone
Playthrough: Off (unchecked)
Also, make sure the microphone is plugged in!
Speech Control Panel
The Speech Setup control panel does not need to be turned on. In fact, it is best to turn it off if you have a version prior to PlainTalk 1.4.
If you are using PlainTalk 1.4 and above, the Speech control panel settings are active. So, if you have your listening options set to "Listen only while key(s) are pressed", you will need to hold down the designated key before speaking (Push-To-Talk). Likewise, if you have the listening options set to "Key(s) toggle listening on and off" and "name is required", you will have to preface your command with the designated name.
If desired, you can turn off the text-to-speech feedback (updating links...ready) from the feedback options panel.
Run the demo in a noise-free environment. Background noise from printers, fax machines, television, radio, fans, etc. interfere with the accuracy of the system.
Preferred Browser
To override SurfTalk's automatic choice of Internet browser, use the "Open Browser…" item from the File menu.
Notes
• SurfTalk sometimes encounters a web page that it can't parse. This will be announced as an "unexpected error" and the hyperlinks on that page will not be active.
• SurfTalk sometimes encounters a web page it can't access (secure sites). There is no notification of this except for the lack of "updating links" message.
• If an internet connection is not already established, the first time you tell SurfTalk to go to a bookmark, there is a delay while the connection is established in the background (especially for a modem connection).
• SurfTalk takes time to fetch and update the hyperlinks. This is being improved.
• SurfTalk recognizes ALT tags associated with Image links. Although the text of these tags is not visible, it can generally be inferred from the image. (Webmasters take note.)
• SurfTalk recognizes SPK tags and will speak the text associated with them,
i.e. <SPK text="Hello World">.
Fixed
• SurfTalk sometimes updates hyperlinks twice (Open Transport).
